The Cut

In Senegal the tradition of female genital mutilation has been an engraved part of society in the rural areas of the country. The region Tambacounda in East Senegal is one the regions with the most cases of female genital mutilation. During the past decades there has been an increasing amount of efforts to abolish the tradition, which often leads to severe consequences for the women involved. For national Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten I photographed the efforts to abolish FGM in Tambacounda as non-governmental organizations in collaborate with the local villages.
